Prep Time10 minutes
This creamy carob mousse is one of my favorite desserts. It is an easy chocolate-style dessert without chocolate. It is a great alternative to chocolate or cocoa powder for those sensitive to cocoa.
I make it with whipped coconut cream, carob powder, and sweeten it with maple syrup. Chill it for a few minutes to firm it and serve.
I love this recipe and eat it guilt-free, without worrying about sensitivities or reactions. It is ;
Gluten free
Soy free
Dairy free
Oat free
nut free
It’s plant-based and anti-inflammatory.
Recipe notes and substitutions for this creamy carob mousse
You can substitute coconut cream with :
Non-dairy heavy whipping cream: Whip about 1 cup (240 ml) until fluffy, then gently fold in the carob powder, sweetener, vanilla, and salt. Chill to set.
Full-fat canned coconut milk, chilled overnight: Scoop out the thick solid layer and use it like coconut cream; leave the watery part behind. You may get a slightly lighter mousse, and some cans won’t separate enough, so choose one with a high coconut-fat content. Avoid carton coconut milk, which is usually too thin.
Ripe avocado: Ripe avocado works well, though the mousse will be denser and have a mild avocado flavor rather than the light, fluffy texture of whipped coconut cream.
Blend 1 ripe avocado with 2–3 tablespoons carob powder, 2–3 tablespoons maple syrup, ½ teaspoon vanilla, and a pinch of salt until smooth. Add a little plant milk if needed to help it blend. Chill for about 30 minutes before serving, and keep covered in the refrigerator for up to 1–2 days.
How do I serve this carob mousse?
After the mousse has set, serve it in a dessert bowl or glass, topped with some fresh berries, shredded coconut, or healthy frosting.
What are the ingredients for the carob mousse?
Carob: This is the main ingredient that gives the chocolatey flavor. Carob comes from pods of the carob tree; these pods are dried and processed into carob powder, which is a great alternative to cocoa powder. Carob is excellent for managing blood sugar, cholesterol, and digestive problems. It is high in antioxidants, which help fight inflammation.
Coconut cream: This is high in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), a type of saturated fat that the body burns for energy. Coconut cream is high in saturated fats, which may raise your cholesterol levels, so take it in moderation. It is naturally plant-based and a great alternative to heavy cream or dairy.
Maple syrup: It adds sweetness to the mousse and is a great alternative to refined sugar.
Vanilla extract: Adds flavor to the mousse.
