Nightshade-free avocado and blueberry salsa combines sweet blueberries, avocado, mango, red onions, lime juice, and cayenne pepper. It is gluten-free and nut-free, making it a refreshing topping for lettuce wraps, gluten-free crackers, or chips.
Though this salsa is free of tomatoes and bell peppers, it is delicious. Satisfying and easy to make. It is ready to serve in 15 minutes.
Why do I make it nightshade-free?
Nightshades can trigger inflammation, joint pain, and digestive issues for some sensitive individuals. Nightshades also contain chemical compounds known as alkaloids, which can trigger symptoms for some people.
Eliminating nightshades can help relieve joint pain and digestive issues for people with autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and inflammation. Going nightshade-free has played a significant role in my healing journey.
Ingredients and substitutions for the nightshade-free avocado and Blueberry salsa
Blueberries: Adds natural sweetness, color, fiber, and antioxidants to the salsa.
Avocado: Adds creaminess and healthy unsaturated fats.
Lime juice: Brightens the avocado and helps slow browning.
Cilantro or parsley: Adds freshness and herbal flavor.
Red or yellow Onions: Add color, sharpness, and savory depth that helps balance the salsa’s sweetness.
Mangos: Add some sweetness, fiber, and digestive enzymes that help ease digestion.
Cayenne or white pepper (optional): Adds a little heat and a mildly earthy flavor.
Salt: Enhances the flavor and balances the sweetness.

You can still make this nightshade-free avocado and Blueberry salsa without the red onions, but you can add fresh grated ginger or cucumber, and it will still taste great.
Chop all the fruit and onions into small cubes, add them to a large mixing bowl, and add the other ingredients except the avocado and lime. Mix well, then add the avocado and lime last; mix and serve your nightshade-free salsa.
How can I store this nightshade-free avocado and blueberry salsa?
You can keep this salsa in the fridge for 24 hours in an airtight container. The avocados may brown and soften, whereas the blueberries may release their juices. To help preserve them for longer:
- Store the salsa in the coolest part of the fridge.
- Place the salsa in a container with minimal air space.
- Add the avocados just before serving if you plan to prepare it ahead.
- Discard if the salsa develops an unpleasant smell, slimy texture, mold, or an unusual discoloration.
